John Goodman has described his 200-pound weight loss as the result of changing his eating habits and building a more consistent exercise routine. Before the transformation, he weighed about 400 pounds, but said he did not want his progress treated as a model for others because he had previously regained weight after losing it.
In an interview with AARP The Magazine in 2018, Goodman said portion control was central to reducing how much he ate. He later told The New Yorker that he had repeatedly lost between 60 and 80 pounds, only to put the weight back on. After giving up alcohol, he said, he found himself eating compulsively instead and decided to take steps to avoid returning to that pattern.
Goodman has spoken about getting sober in 2007 after decades of alcoholism. He has said that food, like alcohol, could not fill an underlying sense of emptiness, and that he had to acknowledge the feeling rather than try to escape it through eating or drinking.
To make his weight loss more sustainable, Goodman hired health coach Mackie Shilstone, exercised six days a week and cut sugar from his diet. Rather than repeating earlier cycles of rapid weight loss followed by a return to old habits, he aimed to lose weight gradually and keep moving. He said the exercise also gave him more energy for work.
His workouts have included boxing, with sessions focused on hitting pads and bags and practicing footwork. Goodman told Rolling Stone in 2023 that he paired this training with a Mediterranean-style diet featuring fish, vegetables, olive oil and nuts. On days he did not box, he stayed active by walking his dogs, using an elliptical or doing lower-impact exercise.
After fracturing his hip while filming Digger in 2025, Goodman said he shifted his focus toward core strength, balance and strength training to help prevent falls. He has also spoken about adjusting to his changed appearance, describing the experience of seeing his slimmer face as strange but enjoyable.
