John Goodman says he is still adjusting to his appearance after losing 200 pounds. In an interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the actor said he generally ignores public comments about his looks, though he considers them fair game to a point because he works in the entertainment industry.

“I’m still trying to get used to my face,” Goodman said, explaining that seeing his reflection can sometimes catch him off guard. He added that it has been fun to notice how much he has changed, but that there is still a lot he is getting used to.

Goodman, who said he once weighed almost 400 pounds, was asked whether his weight had limited his acting opportunities. “Oh, I’m sure it did,” he replied, adding that he believed some of the difficulty may have involved self-sabotage. He recalled arriving in New York in the late 1970s at around 225 pounds and running regularly for a time. Although he said he was working enough, he wondered whether he had held himself back.

The actor has previously said he stopped drinking in 2008 because it had become too much. He also underwent stomach surgery at an undisclosed time. In an interview with The New Yorker, he said the surgery left him anemic and reduced the layer of fat beneath his skin, making him feel cold all the time.

By 2023, Goodman had lost 200 pounds. He said he walked his dogs and did boxing, and told Horowitz that sticking with an active lifestyle ultimately helped him maintain the loss. In the past, he recalled, he would lose 60, 70 or 80 pounds over a summer, only to gain it back—a cycle he said became tiring.
