Michael Douglas has weighed in on Glenn Close’s Oscar record, saying she deserved the best actress award for “Fatal Attraction” instead of Cher, who won for “Moonstruck.” Cher has responded to his claim, though the available report does not detail her response.

Douglas made the remarks during an appearance on “The Graham Norton Show” alongside Close, Kieran Culkin and Naomi Ackie. The conversation turned to Close’s eight competitive Oscar nominations and her upcoming honorary Academy Award, which she joked she was receiving because members “probably don’t want to feel guilty anymore.”

Recalling Close’s performance as Alex Forrest in the 1987 thriller, Douglas said, “She should have won with ‘Fatal Attraction.’” He called her work one of “the greatest performances of all time.” Close received her fourth Oscar nomination for the film, which earned six nominations overall but did not win a competitive award.

Cher won the 1988 best actress Oscar for playing Loretta Castorini, a Brooklyn widow, in “Moonstruck.” Close was among the nominees, alongside Holly Hunter for “Broadcast News,” Sally Kirkland for “Anna” and Meryl Streep for “Ironweed.” Cher had previously received a best supporting actress nomination for “Silkwood.”

Douglas also won at the 1988 ceremony, taking home the best actor award for “Wall Street.” Close is set to receive an honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards in November.
