Michael Douglas came to longtime friend Glenn Close’s defense during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show, where the pair reunited nearly 40 years after starring together in Fatal Attraction.

During the October 30 episode, Close discussed the honorary Oscar she is scheduled to receive at the 2026 Governors Awards. The 79-year-old actress joked that the Academy may be honoring her because members no longer want to feel guilty about her eight Oscar nominations without a competitive win.

Douglas then said Close should have won for Fatal Attraction, recalling that she was nominated for the film while Cher won the award that year for Moonstruck. Host Graham Norton confirmed the reference, prompting Douglas to reply, “That’s what we all said.”

The remark drew surprised laughter from Close, Norton, Kieran Culkin, Naomi Ackie and the studio audience. Ackie jokingly called out “the shade,” while Douglas continued to praise Close, saying she had delivered “one of the greatest performances of all time.” Norton responded with a joke about Cher putting some grey in her hair.

The 2026 Governors Awards are scheduled to take place on November 15, when Close will receive her honorary Oscar.
