Taylor Swift initially held off on meeting about an original song for Toy Story 5 because she was on her Eras Tour and wanted time to rest. When she finally spoke with the filmmakers, she asked whether they had replaced her in the meantime.
At a joint Q&A on Nov. 1 with director Andrew Stanton, Swift said she did not want to displace another songwriter who might have been approached after her. She learned, she said, that the team had not considered anyone else and would have left the film without an end-credits song if she had declined.
Swift agreed to write “I Knew It, I Knew You” with Jack Antonoff after seeing the film. She said the story’s focus on Jessie, her favorite character, and on female friendship helped her connect with it. Swift described the inspiration as immediate, saying she knew she wanted to go home and write the song.
