Jimmy Kimmel took aim at Martha Stewart’s Halloween costume during a Monday monologue, joking about the backlash to a since-deleted photo of the lifestyle personality dressed as an unhoused person. The outfit included a cardboard sign and dirt on her face.

“Martha Stewart, for whatever reason, dressed like a homeless person,” Kimmel said on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” He joked that the costume reflected the economy and asked how it had been photographed and posted, adding: “This is how you know your assistant hates you.”

Stewart told Page Six that the costume was intended to raise awareness of homelessness, which she described as a serious issue. She also said she had spent time and effort supporting charities that address it.

Kimmel advised Stewart not to use a Halloween costume to raise awareness of issues beyond Halloween, making a joke about one of the outfit’s clothing items. Stewart later apologized on Instagram, saying her earlier response had not gone far enough and that the costume was insensitive and not funny. She acknowledged that many people are struggling economically.
