God’s Love We Deliver has clarified the scope of its mission after backlash over Martha Stewart’s Halloween costume depicting a homeless person. A spokesperson for the charity told TMZ that the organization provides free, medically tailored meals to people with life-altering chronic illnesses and does not serve people experiencing homelessness.
The organization confirmed that Stewart attended its annual gala this year and has strongly supported its work. However, helping homeless people is not part of the charity’s stated mission.
The clarification follows criticism of a since-deleted Instagram post in which Stewart promoted her QVC candles while wearing a costume featuring a sign that read, “I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!” She initially defended the costume as an effort to raise awareness about homelessness and cited her history of supporting charitable efforts addressing the crisis.
Stewart later apologized and acknowledged that the costume was insensitive. The charity’s statement does not address any other organizations she may have supported in the fight against homelessness; it was intended to clarify God’s Love We Deliver’s specific focus.
