Martha Stewart says a chocolate spill by Today host Craig Melvin led her to change her Halloween costume at the last minute. She recounted the incident at the CrossCountry Mortgage Sales Rally this week, according to a video obtained by TMZ.
Stewart said Melvin spilled chocolate on the white sweater she planned to wear. With only 10 minutes to get ready for a Halloween party, she said, she chose to dress as someone experiencing homelessness and carried a sign reading “I’m hungry.” The costume drew backlash for depicting extreme poverty.
Stewart previously said she intended the outfit to bring homelessness and hunger to people’s attention, but acknowledged that she had not explained the idea. She later apologized on Instagram, writing that the costume was insensitive and not funny, and that her earlier statement had not gone far enough.
