Hulu’s “Phony” will offer viewers some answers before its season 1 finale, but creator Nick Paley says the ending will also deliver an emotional cliffhanger that sets up the story’s next chapter. The series releases episodes on Tuesdays.
“Phony” follows Sonny, a teenager played by Sam Nivola, who wakes up after a car accident convinced that his mother, Ellen (Connie Britton), is an impostor. Paley says the show’s mystery was planned from the pitch, with a focus on making its clues clear and engaging while giving the story a defined direction.
Paley describes the series’ central concerns as coming of age, identity and the changing relationship between a child and a parent. He said Sonny’s shifting view of his mother reflects the painful realization that a parent is not an all-knowing guide. The idea also connects with the fear of losing a parent, he explained.
Since the show premiered, viewers have shared theories about Ellen’s identity. Paley said fans have noticed details and subtext, but no one has assembled all the elements into a complete explanation. He also pointed to the beavers featured in the story as a clue that emerged during development and later became part of the mystery.
Paley says the finale’s cliffhanger will be both emotionally meaningful to the characters and a starting point for the next story. He added that the season’s second half contains major turns, and that the show’s team tested the episodes with viewers who repeatedly wanted to know what would happen next.
