The second season of ABC’s crime drama ‘R.J. Decker’ ended on October 27 with a cliffhanger, and the show’s creator is already considering what could come next. The series stars Scott Speedman as former newspaper photographer and ex-convict R.J. Decker, who works as a private investigator in South Florida.
The show has not been officially renewed for Season 3. However, showrunner Rob Doherty told TV Insider that the creative team wants to be prepared if ABC and 20th Century Television decide to continue the series. He said the writers want to give viewers a reason to return and be ready for another season.
Spoilers for the Season 2 finale follow. The episode, titled “Before You Accuse Me,” revealed that Jessica was responsible for the murder of Bobby, Mel’s former police colleague. After Jessica’s daughter was taken out of her custody, she threatened Mel’s wife, Catherine, and their daughter, Sofia, leaving their safety unresolved at the end of the episode.
Doherty said the writers have discussed whether to resolve Jessica’s storyline quickly or allow it to continue over several episodes. He also praised the character and the actress who plays her, noting that there is a case for keeping Jessica involved and allowing her to remain a threat.
A potential third season could also revisit R.J.’s complicated relationships with Emi and Trudy. Doherty expressed hope that Beau Bridges could return as R.J.’s father, Reggie Decker, if the series comes back.
The showrunner also said he would prefer a longer season, which would give the writers more time to explore supporting characters including Catherine, Wish and Emi as she considers her next major move.
For now, ABC has yet to decide whether ‘R.J. Decker’ will return. All seven episodes of Season 2 are available to stream on Hulu.
