Keala Settle says she was removed from SAG-AFTRA without advance notice. In a TikTok video posted on November 2, the actress said she learned she was no longer eligible for membership when she went online to pay her dues.
Settle said she had remained a proud member of the actors’ union after moving to England. She described working her way into SAG-AFTRA after leaving Hawaii and said she valued the union’s standards for members’ work and pay.
“I went online to try and pay my dues, and they were like, ‘You don’t exist. Also, you are ineligible to be a member,’” Settle said. She added that she understood other members in the United States and abroad had encountered the same situation.
Settle is best known for playing Lettie Lutz in The Greatest Showman and appeared as Miss Coddle in the Wicked films. Her stage credits include Broadway productions of Waitress, Les Misérables, Hands on a Hardbody and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, as well as West End shows including & Juliet and Sister Act.
