Kaylub Giamanco has been identified as the armed civilian who confronted and killed a 16-year-old gunman at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on October 15, 2026. Giamanco is the father of two students at the school. By the time he intervened, the attacker had killed three children and a teacher in a special education classroom. Another student was critically wounded and a second teacher was injured.

A newly released 911 call, placed shortly before 1 p.m., records Giamanco telling a dispatcher there was someone with a gun at his daughter’s school. He said he was armed and intended to act. The dispatcher urged him not to get involved, but Giamanco replied that it was his daughter’s school. He then reported that the shooter was entering the building and confirmed that shots had been fired. The call ended before he could provide a fuller description.

Police arrived at 1:02 p.m. The attacker, identified as 16-year-old Griffin J. John, was dead by then. According to Giamanco’s account to Oregon Public Broadcasting, he saw John climbing the school fence, heard children pleading and then heard gunfire. He entered the building and reached the special education classroom, where he saw a teacher struggling with the shooter. Giamanco fired, allowing the teacher to escape.

John had been armed with his mother’s shotgun and had fired through locked doors. Police Chief Mike Krantz said John had previously attended the school as a special education student. Authorities said he fired as many as 15 shots and had 44 rounds remaining when he was killed.

Giamanco’s mother, Kenda Freeman, told CBS LA that her son called her after the shooting and said he had killed someone who had shot children at his daughters’ school. She said he told her he could not save everyone. Freeman said the aftermath has been difficult for him and that he is not seeking recognition, but is grateful for support from first responders, school staff and the community. Childhood friend Dyland Costa told NBC News that Giamanco had long been someone who acted when help was needed.

The victims included 5-year-old Rhoam Summer, whose family identified him, and 25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert. At their families’ request, officials have not publicly identified the other two children killed, aged 8 and 11. A 7-year-old girl and teacher Becky Drury were injured.
