A 911 call released by authorities captures Kaylub Giamanco reporting an armed person at Silver Trail Elementary in Oregon and saying he would confront the gunman. The call was made shortly before 1 p.m. on October 15, as Giamanco was driving home for lunch, according to the recording described in the report.
“I have a gun and I will shoot them right now,” Giamanco, 36, told the dispatcher. When the operator urged him not to get involved, he replied that it was his daughter’s school and said he was going to kill the gunman.
Giamanco told the dispatcher that the shooter was entering the building from the south side and confirmed that shots had been fired. The call ended before he answered a question about the gunman’s appearance. The shooter was later identified as 16-year-old Griffin J. John.
Giamanco went into the school and fatally shot John, who was armed with his mother’s shotgun. Police arrived at 1:02 p.m. and found John dead, according to the report. It said officers reached the school four minutes after John was first seen climbing a fence and two minutes after Giamanco’s call.
Before he was stopped, John shot through locked doors and killed three children and a teacher in a special-needs classroom. Another student was critically wounded and a second teacher was injured.
Speaking to Oregon Public Broadcasting, Giamanco recalled hearing children pleading and then gunfire as he moved toward the school. He said he found a teacher struggling with John in the special-education classroom, fired at the shooter, and then shot him twice more when he appeared to be reaching for his weapon.
