Will Smith and his ex-wife Sheree Zampino were recently seen sharing a laugh at an airport in Sydney, Australia, where Smith had been filming his movie Supermax. The encounter reflects the friendly co-parenting relationship they have described over the years as they raise their son, Trey, together.
Smith and Zampino married in 1992 and welcomed Trey later that year. Zampino filed for divorce on Valentine’s Day in 1995. In a 2016 social media video, she said that they married young and struggled to balance their relationship, parenting and Smith’s growing career. She said she left because she was unhappy and that they did not have the tools to make the marriage work.
Smith has also spoken about the difficulty of the split. On Red Table Talk in 2020, he described the divorce as a major personal setback, particularly because Trey was only two at the time.
Smith married Jada Pinkett Smith in 1997, and they later had two children, Jaden and Willow. Pinkett Smith has said that Zampino remains part of the family, and that she and Smith have sometimes traveled with Trey and Zampino so Trey could maintain a connection with both parents.
The family’s blended relationships have not always been easy. Zampino said in 2022 that she and Pinkett Smith had clashed at times, but that they continued working through difficulties with the children in mind. Zampino also publicly supported Smith after he slapped Chris Rock at the 2022 Academy Awards, telling DailyMail.com that they were on good terms and that she stood by him.
Zampino has rejected Smith’s description of their divorce as a failure. In a 2022 Red Table Talk appearance, she said the way they had built a loving blended family and raised Trey together showed that their relationship had succeeded in a different way. She has described their co-parenting as more successful than their marriage and said they were meant to share that responsibility.
