Taylor Swift’s fifth track has become a closely watched spot on each of her albums. Fans began noticing the pattern in her earlier releases, particularly after “All Too Well” appeared as Track 5 on 2012’s Red. Swift later said the tradition started with fans’ observations, rather than as a deliberate plan.
During an Instagram Live in 2019, Swift explained that she had been choosing especially vulnerable songs for that position without initially realizing the pattern. She has since embraced the association, making each new Track 5 a focus of fan anticipation.
The tradition continued with “So Long, London” on 2024’s The Tortured Poets Department and “Eldest Daughter” on The Life of a Showgirl, her 12th studio album, released in October 2025.
Across the songs, themes include heartbreak and difficult relationships, as well as insecurity, personal growth, loyalty and the challenge of opening up to someone. The Track 5 catalogue spans all 12 of Swift’s studio albums, from her 2006 debut through The Life of a Showgirl.
