A University of Michigan student was arrested after a heated argument over Islam was captured on video, including an alleged assault on conservative influencer Lizzy Benichou. The student’s identity was not disclosed.
The incident unfolded Sunday when the student approached a man seated behind a table displaying a sign that asked, “Is Islam Compatible with the West?” She reportedly called the sign “f***ing stupid” and demanded that those at the table show her their permit. Video also appears to show her clapping her hands near the man’s face, causing him to move his head backward.
The student later defended her actions to people filming the encounter, saying she had not touched the man and accusing those present of being “anti-Muslim people.” She then confronted Benichou, who asked whether the way the student was dressed would be accepted in Iran.
The exchange escalated when the student allegedly shoved Benichou to the ground. Police intervened and arrested the student. During the arrest, she reportedly told Benichou, “I should've f***ing killed you when I had the f***ing chance.”
Campus police said the student was processed and released. Authorities plan to forward the case to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office for review. Police also said Benichou, who is not affiliated with the university, received medical treatment and was later released.
