President Donald Trump praised Rep. Haley Stevens after she shifted her support to Republican Mike Rogers in the Michigan Senate race, describing the move as the right decision and calling Stevens brave.
Speaking with reporters after the endorsement became public, Trump said he wanted to call Stevens and thank her. Although he said he had never met the Michigan lawmaker, he added that he had great respect for her and described her as a highly respected Democrat.
Trump, who is closely aligned with Rogers, also said he would like to see Stevens join the Republican Party.
Stevens had previously supported Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed, who defeated her in the party primary. Following her announcement, her chief of staff and communications director reportedly resigned.
Stevens' fiancé, Jason Turkish, said on "TMZ Live" that she might have withdrawn her support for El-Sayed because of campaign advertisements she believed were anti-Semitic.
