President Donald Trump used his first public appearance since Election Night to discuss a planned White House ballroom, rather than dwell on the Republican Party’s losses in the midterms. Speaking to reporters Wednesday at the construction site, he described plans for 50-foot ceilings and a 90,000-square-foot building he called “the most beautiful ballroom in the world.”
Trump said King Charles had asked for space for 350 people at his state dinner, which, he said, the White House’s East Room could not accommodate. He also discussed a helipad, the Reflecting Pool and the durability of limestone.
Democrats won control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives. Trump said little about the result, later repeating his claim that Republicans would have won if he had been on the ballot, despite previously urging voters to vote as though he were.
Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene blamed Trump for the party’s defeat and called him a “cult leader,” according to the source. Democratic Senator Ed Markey joked that Republicans would need to plant new forests to supply paper for the subpoenas Democrats planned to print. The source also reported that voters were concerned about the high cost of living.
