Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut was hospitalized after suffering a stroke during his son’s hockey game, according to a statement from his chief of staff, Allison Herwitt, issued Sunday, November 1.

Herwitt said Murphy began experiencing numbness in his arm while attending the game. He was taken to a local hospital, where doctors determined that he had suffered a stroke, and was later transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring.

According to Herwitt, Murphy is responding well to treatment. His doctors are encouraged by his progress, and he is “awake and alert,” with his team expressing optimism that he will make a full recovery.

Murphy, 53, has two sons, Owen and Rider, with his ex-wife, Catherine Holahan. The couple married in August 2007 and divorced in July 2026 after separating amicably in November 2024.

No further details about Murphy’s health had been publicly released at the time of publication. His staff was contacted for additional comment.

Murphy is not seeking reelection in the 2026 midterm elections, scheduled for Tuesday, November 3. He had nevertheless been campaigning for several Democratic candidates ahead of Election Day.

Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont said he had been with Murphy two days earlier as the senator encouraged residents to vote. Lamont said his family was keeping Murphy and his loved ones in their prayers, describing him as a strong advocate for democracy and the people of Connecticut.
