Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy has been hospitalized after suffering a stroke, according to a statement from his chief of staff, Allison Herwitt.

Herwitt said Murphy began experiencing numbness in his arm while attending his son’s hockey game. He was taken to a hospital, where doctors discovered that he had suffered a stroke, before being transferred to a Johns Hopkins medical center.

According to Herwitt, Murphy responded well to treatment. She said he was awake and alert, adding that doctors were encouraged by his progress and were very optimistic that he would make a full recovery.

Connecticut Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz said she had been with Murphy the day before the stroke and described him as energetically encouraging voters to participate in the upcoming election.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal, who also represents Connecticut, expressed support for Murphy and said he was certain he would welcome his colleague back to the Senate soon.

The report also noted that Murphy had endorsed Abdul El-Sayed the previous week.
