“Saturday Night Live” paid tribute to Patrick Stewart days after the actor died at 86. The show shared a throwback clip from his 1994 hosting appearance, when he enthusiastically introduced musical guests Salt-N-Pepa. A resurfaced promotional photo from the episode also appeared on screen.

Stewart was being cared for by his wife, Sunny Ozell, when he died. His representative said the actor was surrounded by family and friends, as well as live music, prayer, tears and laughter. The representative also described the peaceful expression on Stewart’s face as a lasting reminder of his grace.

Marvel Studios also mourned Stewart ahead of the planned December release of “Doomsday,” referring to him as the legendary actor who brought Professor Charles Xavier to life. Stewart played Professor X throughout the “X-Men” franchise, beginning with the first film in 2000, and was praised for bringing depth and gravitas to the role.

Hugh Jackman and Famke Janssen, who played Wolverine and Jean Grey in the franchise, were among those who also paid tribute to the actor.

In a July interview with TV Insider, Stewart said he did not expect to officially retire. He acknowledged that actors receive fewer roles as they get older but said he continued to receive interesting offers and enjoyed being challenged by new work. “I’ll always and forever be an actor,” he said.
