The latest episode of Scrubs raised the possibility of J.D. and Elliot getting back together, but Sarah Chalke says their romantic future remains undecided. Chalke, who plays Elliot, told Us that she has not been told what the writers intend for the pair and hopes there will be more episodes to explore their relationship.

In the Wednesday, November 4, episode, J.D. (Zach Braff) invited Elliot to dinner, where they discussed reconciling. The two then returned home to their son, before the scene was revealed as a fantasy in J.D.’s mind.

Chalke said she thinks Elliot would have accepted the invitation, though she might not have understood it as a romantic gesture at first. She described the characters as having repaired their relationship and found a way to work together and support each other as co-parents.

J.D.’s return to the hospital has also brought back some of the qualities that first attracted Elliot to him, Chalke noted, leaving room for the characters to reconsider their feelings. She praised the episode’s extended fantasy sequence, which followed J.D. as he comforted a patient struggling with dementia.

The original Scrubs series ran from 2001 to 2010 and ended with J.D. and Elliot married. The revival instead begins with them divorced and working at the same hospital, a change Chalke said creates more possibilities for both comedy and drama. She had expected their relationship to take further twists and turns.

Chalke also said she would enjoy seeing Elliot paired with someone who brings out her excitement and physical comedy. Sean, played by Scott Foley, is no longer a romantic possibility after he began dating Charlie, J.D.’s girlfriend, played by Rachel Bilson.

Scrubs airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC and streams on Hulu the following day.
