Victoria Heuermann, the daughter of Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex A. Heuermann, was dismissed from jury selection in a Nassau County child sexual abuse case, according to Newsday. She had responded to a summons in late October and was called as a potential juror in a sexual molestation trial.
Victoria, 30, was asked during jury vetting whether she had been convicted of a crime or knew anyone who had. Her attorney, Robert Macedonio, told Newsday that she requested to answer the question privately, after which the judge, prosecutors and defense attorney met in chambers. They then learned of her connection to Heuermann.
The court asked whether she could remain impartial and consider the facts of the case. She said she believed she could, Macedonio said, but the judge reportedly expressed concern that her presence on the jury could become a distraction. She was ultimately excused. Her attorney said he had offered to write a letter asking the court to release her, but that she was willing to serve.
Macedonio said Victoria was nervous about returning to a courtroom after her father pleaded guilty in April to seven murders and admitted to an eighth killing. He was sentenced to three consecutive life terms without parole, along with four consecutive terms of 25 years to life, according to the report.
Her attorney praised her for answering the court’s questions honestly, saying she could have said she was unable to be impartial. He also said her connection to her father’s crimes would continue to affect her in situations such as job interviews and background checks. Victoria has publicly condemned her father’s actions, according to the report.
