Police in Mt. Lebanon responded at about 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3, after three people were found in the street near a parking garage. Authorities later identified them as 42-year-old Patrick Lynch and his children, James, 8, and Caroline, 6. All three were pronounced dead at the scene after first responders attempted life-saving measures.

Authorities believe Lynch threw his children from the parking garage before jumping himself. Police initially said the deaths were not accidental. The information available does not indicate a motive.

Mt. Lebanon Police Chief Jason Haberman said the deaths would cause significant trauma in the community, adding that many residents would know someone involved in the incident.

Markham and Washington Elementary Schools announced they would close on Wednesday, November 4. The Mt. Lebanon School District said it was deeply saddened and that students at its other schools could take an excused absence if affected by the tragedy. The district also said Resolve Crisis Services provides confidential support around the clock at 1-888-796-8226.
