Sir Patrick Stewart maintained a low profile during the two years leading up to his death on October 28 at the age of 86. His family described his passing as following a "brief and poignant" battle with Alzheimer's disease and Lewy body dementia. During this final period, the Star Trek legend did not make any public appearances until his last outing in November 2024.

Stewart was last photographed attending a soccer match between Crawley Town F.C. and Huddersfield Town A.F.C., representing his hometown of Yorkshire. At the game, he wore a blue-and-white Huddersfield scarf, waving to the crowd with a smile. Just three weeks prior to this event, the actor attended a special screening in Los Angeles for The Piano Lesson. Directed by Malcolm Washington and starring John David Washington, the film's cast took photos with Stewart at the event.

The night before the screening of The Piano Lesson, Stewart was seen chatting with Paul Mescal and the cast of Gladiator II during a viewing of that film. Since these final outings, he was not photographed at any public events. His family shared on Instagram on October 29 that he was surrounded by love in his final days, noting he was held in the "warm embrace of family and friends" amidst live music, prayer, tears, and laughter.

Longtime friend Sir Ian McKellen also paid tribute to his fellow Royal Shakespeare Company member. Writing on Instagram, McKellen stated that Stewart "wore his heart on his sleeve," making him a man to rely on, admire, and love. Other stars, including fellow X-Men castmates Hugh Jackman and Rebecca Romijn, have also shared tributes to the late actor.
