Patrick Stewart, the beloved actor known for his roles in Star Trek and X-Men, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 86. In the years leading up to his death, he made a heartbreaking confession regarding his family life, admitting that his relationship with his children was practically non-existent. During an October 2023 interview with the Irish Independent, Stewart revealed that the memory of his children caused him pain every day, driven by a sense of responsibility for who they became due to his influence or lack thereof.

Stewart acknowledged that he consistently placed his acting work before his family. He shared a son, Daniel, now 58, and a daughter, Sophie, 54, with his first wife, Sheila Falconer. The couple married in 1966 and divorced in 1990. Reflecting on the distance between them, Stewart noted that while he never expected this outcome, both children are now adults in their 50s, and their relationship has effectively ceased to exist.

When asked if he portrayed Captain Jean-Luc Picard as the father he wished he had, Stewart suggested it was more likely the father he wished he could have been. He admitted that being the kind of father he wanted to be was difficult. This sentiment echoed comments he made in a 2009 interview with the Independent, where he stated he could have done better as a parent when his children were young because he was obsessed with his work. At that time, he expressed hope that he was correcting those mistakes with his grandchildren and noted that his own children seemed to have forgiven him.

Stewart's personal life included two subsequent marriages after Falconer. He married Wendy Neuss in 2000, ending the union three years later, before marrying Sunny Ozell in 2013. An announcement regarding his death stated he was held in her loving care, surrounded by family, friends, live music, and prayer. The statement described his passing as a moment of profound emotion inspired by his lifetime of devotion.

Months prior to his death, Stewart also discussed the challenges of his career in an interview with TV Insider in July. He noted that available roles diminish as actors age but expressed that he continued to receive interesting offers and loved being challenged by new work. Despite these difficulties, he stated he could not imagine officially retiring, affirming that he would always be an actor.
