Nino Mangione, a cousin of Luigi Mangione, narrowly won a seat on the Baltimore County Council in Maryland, representing District 5. The Republican received 49% of the vote, while his Democratic opponent, Shawn McIntosh, received 45%, according to the reported results.

Mangione’s campaign website lists violent crime among its main concerns and describes it as increasing in Baltimore County. The site cites murders, shootings, carjackings and robberies as issues facing residents.

Before the election, Mangione had served on the council for five months. Republicans selected him in June to fill a vacant seat. He previously served in the Maryland House of Delegates from 2019 to 2026.

The election came days after Luigi Mangione’s legal team asked a New York state court to dismiss its case against him, arguing that prosecuting him would violate the protection against double jeopardy. In August, Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty to federal charges of interstate stalking resulting in death and stalking through the use of interstate facilities resulting in death, in connection with the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
