Nicolas Cage said he is currently staying in hotels after severe damage to his Malibu home. The actor spoke about his living situation during an appearance at L.A. Comic Con on Saturday, when asked about his Halloween plans.

“I’m currently a little bit homeless,” Cage said, explaining that something had happened to his house and that he did not have a usual place from which to welcome trick-or-treaters. He said he planned to take his four-year-old daughter, August, trick-or-treating in Santa Monica, then watch Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” after she went to bed.

Cage’s beachfront property, reported to be worth $10.5 million, was badly damaged after heavy rain and severe coastal erosion. A sinkhole opened beside the home, and photographs taken on September 8 showed a deep hole where the driveway had been, with sections of asphalt and concrete collapsed nearby.

The damage also affected access for neighbors. According to the report, seven homes on the street were deemed unsafe for occupancy, while 24 others were set to be red-tagged because vehicles could not safely reach them. The City of Malibu said all 31 properties were marked unsafe because emergency responders could not access the area. The collapse of a beachfront driveway had extended into the roadway, blocking access for residents and emergency services.

Cage is seeking to protect the property. He reportedly obtained an emergency permit to place sandbags along the beach and outside the home to guard against waves and further erosion. Additional permits were approved for removing debris and preparing for shoring work and soil sampling.
