The three-part documentary series Taken: Natalee Holloway premiered on Netflix on November 4, revisiting the high-profile case of the 18-year-old American student who vanished during a graduation trip to Aruba in May 2005. The series follows the two-decade-long search for answers by her mother, Beth Holloway, and highlights recent legal developments involving primary suspect Joran van der Sloot.

Van der Sloot, now 39, remains incarcerated in Peru where he is serving a 28-year sentence for the 2010 murder of Stephany Flores Ramírez. He was temporarily transferred to the United States in 2023 to face federal charges related to an extortion scheme targeting Beth Holloway. On October 18, 2023, he pleaded guilty to wire fraud and extortion, admitting that he had obtained $25,100 from her by promising information about Natalee's remains. As part of the plea agreement, van der Sloot confessed to killing Natalee on an Aruban beach in 2005 and disposing of her body in the ocean. He received a 20-year federal sentence that runs concurrently with his time in Peru.

Despite this confession, van der Sloot has never been convicted of Natalee Holloway's murder. Beth Holloway stated in a new interview with Netflix's Tudum that she is continuing to pursue criminal charges against him in the Netherlands. She filed a criminal complaint with Dutch prosecutors in March 2026 and is working with attorneys Royce de Vries and Annemiek van Spanje on the matter. While Aruban authorities noted that the statute of limitations for manslaughter had expired locally and evidence was insufficient for murder charges there, Dutch prosecutors indicated they could potentially pursue a case because van der Sloot is a Dutch national and the limitation period has not expired in the Netherlands.

Beth Holloway described the situation as a "new mission," noting that while she finally received answers regarding Natalee's death, the legal process is not yet complete. She confirmed that Dutch prosecutors are currently gathering documents to review the possibility of further legal action, though no new murder charges have been announced and there is no confirmed timeline for a decision. Meanwhile, reports from August 2026 indicate van der Sloot was held at Challapalca prison in southern Peru, where he had requested a transfer citing threats from other inmates, though the status of that request remains unclear.
