Michael Mann was hospitalized after accidentally shooting himself in the leg at a Los Angeles gun range on Saturday, according to TMZ and the Los Angeles Police Department.
The 83-year-old filmmaker was attempting to holster the firearm when it discharged at around 4 p.m. at The Range LA, sources told TMZ. Paramedics transported Mann to a hospital by ambulance.
The LAPD confirmed that the incident occurred while Mann was undergoing firearm training. His representatives later told Page Six that the injury was “superficial” and that he was expected to be released from the hospital soon.
An insider said Mann has practiced target shooting for decades. The Range LA is a members-only club on the city’s Westside that describes itself as serving serious enthusiasts, collectors and beginners.
Mann has directed films including the 1995 crime thriller “Heat,” starring Al Pacino, Robert De Niro and Val Kilmer. He later worked with Pacino on “The Insider,” which also featured Russell Crowe and Christopher Plummer, and directed “Collateral,” starring Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx.
He also produced “Ferrari,” the 2003 drama featuring Adam Driver, Penélope Cruz and Shailene Woodley. Mann is currently in production on “Heat 2,” which stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale.
