Michael Mann is recovering after being accidentally injured at a shooting range in Los Angeles on Oct. 31. The Collateral director was taken to a hospital in stable condition after a weapon discharged while holstered, according to his representatives and a Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson.
Mann’s representatives said in a statement on Nov. 2 that the incident caused a superficial injury and that he was treated and released the following day. The LAPD spokesperson said responding officers determined the shooting was accidental and described the injury as minor.
Mann, known for crime films including Heat and Thief, has practiced target shooting as a hobby for decades. He previously discussed firearm training while preparing Heat, his 1995 film starring Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, saying the actors trained at Los Angeles County sheriff’s shooting ranges under strict safety procedures.
The director also said the cast practiced three days a week for months to prepare for the film’s central shootout. Mann is revisiting that story in the forthcoming Heat 2.
