Meri Brown said she agreed to legally divorce Kody Brown in 2014 because she believed it was the best decision for their family. Speaking on the Nov. 1 episode of Sister Wives, she explained that the divorce would allow Kody to legally marry Robyn Brown and make it easier to adopt Robyn’s children, Dayton, Aurora and Breanna.
Meri said she entered the decision believing that her relationship with Kody would remain stable. Instead, she recalled that he was kind to her for only about a month after the divorce. She said she had expected greater appreciation after making the change to support his family plans.
Kody and Meri had married in 1990, and they share one child, Leon. Their relationship was later acknowledged as over in 2022. Kody subsequently remained legally and romantically partnered with Robyn after Janelle Brown and Christine Brown also announced their separations from him.
Meri said she might have approached the divorce differently if she had still been legally married to Kody when the relationship ended. She also argued that the arrangement ultimately benefited him, regardless of whether the change had been deliberately planned by Kody and Robyn.
Christine questioned whether the divorce idea had truly originated with Meri. She recalled Robyn discussing the possibility before the family moved from Lehi and said she remembered wondering whether Robyn was suggesting that Meri surrender her legal marriage so Kody could marry Robyn and adopt her children.
Janelle likewise said she believed there had been more behind the decision than was publicly acknowledged and suggested that Kody and Robyn may already have wanted the legal change. Christine added that Meri acted with sincere intentions and genuinely wanted to help Robyn’s children be adopted.
Even so, Christine said she viewed the divorce as a mistake and described it as the start of a more serious breakdown in Meri and Kody’s relationship.
