Matthew McConaughey turns 57 on Nov. 4. The actor, known for How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and Interstellar, has said that entering his 50s prompted him to take stock of his life and consider what he wanted from the years ahead.

Speaking on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast in January, McConaughey recalled that his first few years in his 50s felt uncertain. Rather than describe the experience as a midlife crisis, he called it an opportunity to look back on what he had done and think about where he was going.

He also said the milestone led him to ask what his own “documentary” would be, shifting his attention toward the story he is living beyond the characters he plays on screen.

McConaughey said his work and family are parts of the same life, naming his roles as a father, husband, performer and writer. He shares three children—Levi, 18, Vida, 16, and Livingston, 13—with his wife, Camila Alves McConaughey.

In a 2020 interview with People, McConaughey said becoming a father had always been his only dream and remained the most important part of his life.
