Matthew Broderick says what was supposed to be a one-day meeting with Warren Beatty before filming Rules Don’t Apply stretched into a stay of about three months at the filmmaker’s home. Broderick shared the story during an Oct. 22 appearance on the podcast Nepo, Baby!, describing himself jokingly as a possible “victim” of the “longest meeting ever.”

Broderick recalled driving to Beatty’s Los Angeles home feeling nervous. After dinner, Beatty gave him the film’s script to read. By the time Broderick had finished and they discussed it, it was late, so Beatty offered him a place to stay rather than return to his hotel.

The next morning, Broderick tried to leave quietly, but came across Beatty preparing oatmeal. When Broderick mentioned going to the gym, Beatty pointed out that the house had one. Broderick said he ultimately stayed in a guest house and continued living there while making the film.

He joked that the meeting lasted for months because he “never left” Mulholland. Rules Don’t Apply, a romantic comedy released in 2016, was directed and co-written by Beatty, who also starred in it alongside Broderick, Lily Collins and Alden Ehrenreich.
