Martha Stewart said she is “distressed” that her Halloween costume depicting a homeless person offended people, explaining that the outfit was intended to draw attention to homelessness.
In a statement to TMZ, Stewart said she has spent decades helping people celebrate Halloween through recipes, craft ideas and entertaining advice. She described the holiday as one of her favorites.
“I am distressed that my Halloween costume yesterday, which was intended to bring more awareness to the very serious subject of homelessness, has offended people, which was never my intention,” Stewart said.
She added that homelessness remains one of the United States’ greatest challenges and ongoing crises. Stewart said she cares deeply about the issue and has spent significant time and effort supporting charities that address homelessness.
Stewart also said she is “committed to continuing to make a difference.”
The controversy followed a post in which Stewart shared a photo of herself wearing tattered clothing and holding a sign reading “I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!” The image appeared in an Instagram carousel promoting QVC candles and was later removed. Several followers saved the image before it was deleted, prompting criticism from social media users.
