Martha Stewart has addressed the backlash surrounding a Halloween post in which she dressed as a homeless person. The lifestyle personality said she was remorseful after the image prompted criticism and explained that the post had been intended to draw attention to homelessness.

“I am distressed that my Halloween costume yesterday, which was intended to bring more awareness to the very serious subject of homelessness, has offended people, which was never my intention,” Stewart said in a statement to People on Nov. 1.

The since-deleted photo showed Stewart wearing torn jeans, layered plaid and button-up shirts, a beanie and dirt on her face. She also held a clipboard with a sign reading, “I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!!” The post’s caption encouraged followers to shop from her QVC candle line.

Stewart said Halloween has long been important to her professional work, pointing to the recipes, craft ideas and entertaining advice she has shared over the years. She also said homelessness remains a serious issue in the United States and a cause she has supported through charitable efforts.

“Homelessness continues to remain one of America’s greatest challenges and ongoing crises,” Stewart said, adding that she remains committed to making a difference.

E! News reported that it contacted Stewart for additional comment but had not received a response.
