Martha Stewart faced criticism after sharing a Halloween photo that appeared to depict her as a homeless person. The image showed Stewart wearing tattered clothing, with dirt smeared across her face and a sign reading, “I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!”
The photo was reportedly part of an Instagram carousel promoting candles Stewart sells on QVC. She captioned the post, “My QVC candles are perfect for Halloween!!!” but deleted the image shortly afterward. Social media users had already saved screenshots, and the picture later circulated on Reddit.
Critics described the costume as “offensive,” “gross” and “out of touch.” Some objected to what they viewed as an attempt to make light of homelessness and poverty, particularly given Stewart’s reported estimated net worth of $400 million.
Hours after removing the photo, Stewart issued a statement through her representative. She said the costume was intended to bring more awareness to the serious issue of homelessness, adding that offending people “was never my intention.”
Stewart also said homelessness remains one of America’s greatest challenges and ongoing crises, and that she cares deeply about the issue and has spent significant time and effort supporting charities that address it.
The incident follows Stewart’s long-standing reputation for elaborate Halloween costumes. In previous years, she has dressed as figures including Queen Elizabeth I and a glamorous sorceress, and has often celebrated the holiday with her close friend Snoop Dogg.
