Martha Stewart has apologized again after facing backlash over a 2026 Halloween costume that depicted an unhoused person. The lifestyle personality acknowledged that her initial response had not gone far enough and said the costume was insensitive.
“It’s hard to admit when you’ve really screwed up. My earlier statement didn’t go far enough. I know many people are suffering economically,” Stewart wrote on Instagram, according to the original report. “Wearing a costume like I did was insensitive and not funny. I am very sorry.”
Stewart had shared, and later deleted, a photo showing her wearing tattered clothing, makeup resembling dirt and a sign reading, “I AM HUNGRY. HELP ME.” Critics accused her of mocking people experiencing Homelessness.
In her first statement, Stewart said the costume had been intended to raise awareness about homelessness, not offend anyone. She described homelessness as a serious and ongoing crisis in the United States and said she had supported charities addressing the issue and remained committed to making a difference.
Her second statement received mixed reactions. Some followers expressed continued support, while others questioned how the costume had been approved by her team. Representatives for Stewart had been contacted for comment, according to the report.
The costume was not Stewart’s only Halloween look this year. She also shared photos from an appearance on the Today show, where she wore an Olympics-inspired costume and appeared alongside host Craig Melvin, who dressed as Snoop Dogg.
