Martha Stewart has responded to criticism surrounding her 2026 Halloween costume, which prompted backlash for appearing to mock people experiencing homelessness.

In a statement to Page Six on Sunday, November 1, the 85-year-old lifestyle personality said she was distressed that the costume had offended people. She explained that it was intended to bring attention to homelessness and said causing offense was never her intention.

Stewart had shared a photo of the costume on social media earlier in the day. The image, which was later deleted, showed her wearing tattered clothing and what appeared to be dirt or makeup on her face. She also held a sign reading, “I AM HUNGRY. HELP ME.”

After the image was met with immediate criticism, Stewart removed the post. In her statement, she described homelessness as one of America’s greatest ongoing challenges and said she cared deeply about the issue. She also highlighted the time and effort she has devoted to supporting charities that address homelessness, adding that she remained committed to making a difference.

Stewart has not made any further public comments about the controversy. Us also reached out for comment.

The lifestyle mogul has previously spoken about philanthropy and supporting communities in need. While accepting the Award of Inspiration at the 2025 amfAR Palm Beach event, she said that helping others begins with identifying a need and considering how to address it.

Stewart also discussed her longstanding support for amfAR, which funds AIDS research. Recalling an experience from 1985, she said she had opened her home to a close friend so he could die surrounded by comfort and love. She added that she had promised him she would show his children the world—and kept that promise.
