Martha Stewart is responding to criticism of a Halloween costume that sparked backlash on social media. On Saturday, October 31, the 85-year-old businesswoman and television personality shared a photo of herself dressed as a homeless person, wearing ripped clothing and dirt on her face while holding a clipboard reading, “I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!”

Stewart later deleted the image after facing criticism. In a statement to Page Six, she said she was distressed that the costume had offended people, explaining that her intention had been to draw attention to homelessness.

“Homelessness continues to remain one of America’s greatest challenges and ongoing crises,” Stewart said, adding that she cares deeply about the issue and has spent considerable time and effort supporting charities that address it. She also said she remains committed to making a difference.

Stewart described Halloween as one of her favorite holidays and referenced her decades of sharing recipes, craft ideas and entertaining advice to help others celebrate it.
