Johnny Depp has explained what might bring him back as Captain Jack Sparrow: the chance to send the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise off on a better note. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight while promoting his new film, Ebenezer, Depp said a return would depend on the next movie being positioned to take the series forward in the right way.

“The only involvement I really want to have, truly, is just to send them off on a better note,” Depp said, referring to the franchise. He added that he would not turn down a request from longtime friend and Pirates producer Jerry Bruckheimer, saying he trusts him and values their friendship.

Depp last played Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, released in 2017. Although a sixth film has been discussed for years, no new installment has been officially confirmed. Bruckheimer said last year that he had spoken with Depp about returning and that work was underway on a screenplay. The report says there have been no further updates since then.
