John Goodman says he is still adjusting to the physical changes following a 200-pound weight loss, describing his body as “messed up” and admitting that seeing himself can feel unfamiliar.
“Since I’m in this business, it is fair game — up to a point,” Goodman said about public discussion of his weight. He added that he generally chooses to ignore the attention surrounding his transformation.
“It’s weird,” the actor said. “I think of myself as one way, and then I look at myself and think, ‘Oh, wow.’” Goodman described the experience as strange but said he is gradually getting used to it.
The “Digger” actor also acknowledged that his weight may have affected his career early on. He said he was around 225 pounds when he began working in the industry and was then in good shape from running outdoors every day in New York City. Goodman added that some of the limitations he faced may have involved self-sabotage.
“I still feel like a fat guy, but it’s nice to be able to go into regular clothing stores and buy things,” he said. Goodman also admitted that he has to force himself to go to the gym and would skip it if left to his own devices.
In recent years, Goodman has discussed hiring a personal trainer, cutting sugar from his diet and exercising six days a week. He previously reflected on his sedentary lifestyle, saying that spending time sitting around required a great deal of energy to decide what to eat next.
