John Goodman says he is still getting used to his appearance after losing 200 pounds. Speaking on the November 2 episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the 74-year-old actor reflected on how the change has affected his perception of his body and face.
Goodman said he initially declined a nude scene in HBO’s The Righteous Gemstones, which ran from 2019 to 2025, because he was uncomfortable with how his body might look on camera. He recalled telling the production that his body felt “too messed up” after losing the weight. He and the crew eventually worked out a way to film the scene.
The actor said he is still adjusting to seeing himself differently, describing the experience as strange but enjoyable. He also wondered whether his past lifestyle may have amounted to “self-sabotage,” saying he had been working steadily but was not entirely happy with it.
Goodman has previously described changing his habits gradually. In a 2016 interview with ABC, he said he stopped eating constantly and focused on moving and exercising, rather than losing weight quickly and returning to old routines. He said staying active gave him more energy for work.
