Jarome Iginla says he has been dealing with neurological health issues that may be linked to his hip replacement surgery. Speaking to Sportsnet on November 3, the 49-year-old said he is unsure of the cause and is still working to understand what is happening.
Iginla had hip replacement surgery a few years ago. He said he needs more time to investigate his condition but remains hopeful he will recover fully. He added that things are gradually coming under control.
Sportsnet reported that Iginla has had high mercury levels and is working to lower them while trying to determine whether they are connected to possible cobalt exposure. The outlet noted that some cobalt-chromium hip implant components can release metal particles or ions through wear or corrosion, which may lead to complications.
Iginla retired in 2018 after 21 NHL seasons, including 16 with the Calgary Flames. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2020, his first year of eligibility. His younger son, Joe, plays for the Vancouver Giants and was drafted by Calgary in 2026; his older son, Tij, was selected sixth overall by the Utah Mammoth in 2024 and plays for the Tucson Roadrunners of the American Hockey League.
