James Talarico is projected to win the Texas Senate seat, defeating Republican candidate Ken Paxton, according to the midterm election results. Talarico, 37, has represented Texas in the House since 2018. The seat is being vacated by John Cornyn, who lost his reelection bid in the primary.
The projected win would be the first statewide victory for Texas Democrats since 1994 and the first time a Democrat has been elected to the state’s Senate seat since 1988. Talarico celebrated the result with a brief message on social media: “Texas forever.”
Democrats have also been projected to take control of both chambers of Congress, flipping several seats in the House and Senate, according to the report.
