James Talarico and Gina Hinojosa celebrated their election victories at a local Whataburger late Tuesday, raising large soft drinks with supporters after a tense campaign season.
Talarico defeated Ken Paxton in the race for the U.S. Senate. Hinojosa also scored an upset, defeating incumbent Texas Governor Greg Abbott by a reported seven points. Abbott, who has held the office since 2015, was seeking a fourth term.
The two victories were part of broader Democratic gains on Tuesday, with the party winning back both the Senate and the House by wide margins.
