Irish Olympian Ciara-mageean/">Ciara Mageean has died at the age of 34 after a battle with stage IV bowel cancer. Her death was announced in a statement shared on her official Instagram account on Sunday, November 1.

“At 6:30am this morning, Ciara lost her battle with cancer surrounded by her loved ones,” the statement said, describing Mageean as a beloved daughter, sister, wife, friend and inspiration.

Mageean represented Ireland in the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games. She publicly revealed her diagnosis in July 2025, saying she had begun treatment and was grateful for the support of her family and close friends.

At the time, Mageean asked for privacy while she focused on her recovery. She said she intended to approach the illness with the same determination she had brought to her athletics career.

In a June interview with Ireland’s RTÉ, Mageean recalled being told that the cancer had originated in her bowel and had spread to her liver, with a small amount also detected in her lungs. She described the diagnosis as an emotional and uncertain moment for herself and her husband, Tommy Moran.

Mageean is survived by her parents, her sister and Moran. The couple married in October, weeks before her death.
