Inde Navarrette used her Saturday Night Live debut to respond to controversial comments previously made by Shane Gillis about women’s gym clothing. The Obsession star appeared on the October 31 episode, shortly after Gillis had hosted the show earlier in the month.
Navarrette, 25, began her monologue by discussing her recent casting as Rogue in the new X-Men reboot. She said the role required her to get fit, then joked that she put on her “little whore outfit” before going to the gym—a pointed reference to Gillis’ earlier monologue.
During his appearance, Gillis complained that women now dressed “like whores” at the gym and criticized the style of their workout shorts. His remarks drew immediate backlash.
Schitt’s Creek actor Dan Levy responded in a social media video, arguing that women wearing short shorts to exercise does not make them whores and calling men who use that language misogynistic. Levy also said that men should challenge the objectification of women rather than contribute to it.
Gillis has not addressed the criticism of his comments. Navarrette, meanwhile, continued her monologue by expressing her excitement about appearing on the program and introducing the night’s show.
Saturday Night Live airs on NBC on Saturdays at 11:30 p.m. ET.
