Inde Navarrette appeared to take aim at Shane Gillis during her Saturday Night Live monologue, referencing the comedian’s recent controversial comments about women’s gym clothing.
During the Oct. 31 episode, Navarrette spoke about preparing for her role as Rogue in the upcoming X-Men movie and the importance of getting fit. She then said that she had been putting on her “little wh--e outfit” each morning before going to the gym.
The joke received loud cheers and laughter from the audience. It came two weeks after Gillis used the same term during his Oct. 10 SNL monologue, when he discussed seeing women wearing athletic clothing at the gym.
Gillis described the clothing in graphic terms and said he did not know that women “just dressed like wh--es now.” His remarks drew backlash, including from Dan Levy, who argued that women’s clothing was not the issue and called men who used the term misogynists.
SNL alumni Ego Nwodim and Cecily Strong also responded to the controversy. Nwodim referred to herself as a “whore reporting for duty,” while Strong joked about wearing “slutty” orange shoes to Pilates.
Gillis was also criticized for the comments during his third SNL appearance. E! News reported that it contacted him for comment but did not receive a response. At the end of the live show, however, he apologized for accidentally swearing earlier in the broadcast.
