Hailey Bieber has spoken about experiencing premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) after the birth of her son, Jack Blue Bieber, now 2. In an interview with Women’s Wear Daily published Oct. 30, she described her postpartum experience and called for more research and open discussion about women’s health.

“I feel really drawn to women’s health,” Bieber said, adding that she feels frustrated by the lack of research, awareness and conversation around the subject. She said the experience of pregnancy and childbirth made those concerns especially personal.

Bieber said she struggled with PMDD after having Jack, whom she shares with husband Justin Bieber. PMDD is similar to premenstrual syndrome but more severe, and can occur in the two weeks before menstruation. Symptoms may include severe depression, irritability and tension, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office on Women’s Health.

Bieber said talking about her experience helps her feel less alone, and that sharing difficulties can make the journey feel less isolating. Her company, Rhode, is committing $5 million and a three-year partnership to the Foundation for Women’s Health.

She has also previously discussed a uterine septum, which can raise the risk of miscarriage or early delivery. Bieber said she learned about it before becoming pregnant, but that her pregnancy came as a surprise. She has since said she and Justin plan to have more than one child and that she loves being a mother.
